Just when you think you’ve dealt with something good and proper, it comes back to bite you on the bum.

For the last few weeks a friend had kindly leant me his office space to work from. I was so grateful to have a change of scenery from the home office that I accepted quick smart.

So?

So it brought up all my ‘stuff’.

These are the ridiculous questions I had rolling around in my head;

“What will I wear? I can’t wear opened toed shoes. No. It’s an office environment. I’ll have to look smart.”

“What time will I go in? I don’t want my friend to think I’m a slacker. Perhaps I’ll forgo yoga in the mornings for an early start. 8.30?”

“What time will I leave for the day? I know I’m not really productive on the PC past 3pm. Perhaps I’ll log off and just write at that time? 5.30 is really a more appropriate time.”

“Should I take my lunch so I don’t have to leave my desk during the day?”

Argh!

Somehow I equated an office with losing my freedoms. Norman Doidge author of The Brain That Changes Itself tells us that what fires together, wires together. Your brain makes associations between context and thought patterns.

My trigger here was the office. My old conditioning was bound to come up being that it was wired to an office environment.

It’s just a test really.

So what did I do?

I laughed in its face, turned up at 10, wore opened toed shoes and jeans, left at 3 and bought my lunch. And the next day I didn’t even show up. I worked from home again.

It was all my choice. I worked so hard to create a life where I had more choice; I wasn’t going to let old Lynda ruin it.

If this ever happens to you; all you have to do is shake it up. Do something different. Break the pattern and you will break the cycle.

How do you break patterns and cycles when you realise they’re not serving you?
