I’m taking a little break in Bali at present. (I’ll stop talking about it soon. I promise it’s just because I’m excited!)

On Thursday I spoke of the busyness in the lead up.

I realised in all the hub bub that I was only getting an average of 6 – 7 hours sleep per night. Now, I know that sounds like it’s ok. But this little lady needs her 8 hours. And so do you.

And here’s why; rest and relaxation is a cumulative process. Do you know what I just read? A study has revealed that if the body only rests for 6 hours per night for 2 weeks, your physical and mental performance decreases to a level equivalent to not sleeping for 48 hours straight!

What’s worse, in the study, participants only thought their performance issues were of a lower standard in the first two days of the two weeks. However, it was consistently poor. We are obviously poor judgers of our reality!

When we’re out there, sipping coffee, running around in fluorescently lit offices, we think we’re ok… but we’re not. We don’t even realise that we’re not.

The reality and irony of this is, we’re so busy making time to be productive (by depriving ourselves of sleep) that we are actually having the opposite effect – we end up worse.

Not to mention the other effects. What else are you losing if you choose to lose sleep? Is there time for your relationship? Your craft? Your wellbeing?

What’s it all worth to you?

I can tell you it’s not actually worth anything to your employer… and if your employer is you, than they’re a pretty brutal and counterproductive boss 😉

(Thanks to James Clear for the info on sleep deprivation and influencing this blog!)
